Jaundice is known to develop when the skin, white of the eyes and mucous membranes display yellow discolourations. Excessive secretion of bilirubin, (a yellow-orange coloured pigment) leads to this colour. The severity of the disease depends on the causes.
Symptoms:-
If jaundice is due to infection then patient experiences fevers, chills, abdominal pain, and changes in skin colour. If the jaundice is not due to infection, then symptoms of weight loss and skin itchiness could be experienced and symptoms of jaundice caused by biliary tract cancers and pancreatic cancers are usually abdominal pain. Jaundice due to liver disease can cause chronic hepatitis, inflammation of the joints and pyoderma gangrenosum.
Causes:-
Jaundice is caused in three phases:
Before bilirubin production: due to reabsorption of large blood clots or haematomas and haemolytic anaemias or blood cells removed from the blood stream During bilirubin production: hepatitis A, B and C, infectious mononucleosis, alcohol and steroids After the production of bilirubin: gall bladder stones, inflammation of the gall bladder and pancreatitis

Imaging studies could include ultrasound, CT scan, MRI and HIDA scan. Some invasive testing methodologies would be endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography and a liver biopsy.
Most treatment modalities for jaundice depend on the underlying cause for the disease and the diagnosis established.
