Acute Cholecystitis

Date : 11-Jan-2021

In our body, the gallbladder is a small organ that is situated below the liver to store the bile that is produced in the liver. The function of bile is to help in the digestion of fats in the small intestine. Acute cholecystitis is a painful condition in the abdomen which occurs when bile becomes trapped in the gallbladder causing inflammation. Most frequently this occurs due to the blockage by gallstones. Problems with the bile duct, tumors, and certain infections can also cause acute cholecystitis.

Symptoms

  • Excruciating pain in the upper right or center abdomen
  • Radiating pain to the right shoulder or back
  • Pain on touch over abdomen
  • Pain aggravated after meals
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Fever and chills
  • Dark stools
  • Yellowing of the skin and eyes

Treatment

Seek medical attention right away if you have persistent abdominal pain and the above symptoms. The doctor decides the best line of treatment based on the severity of cholecystitis. Non-surgical treatment includes antibiotics to fight infection, painkillers and a low fat diet. If you have gallstones or recurrent cholecystitis, you will probably require surgery to remove your gallbladder.

Prevention

The risk of developing acute cholecystitis can be reduced by maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding foods that have high fat content since cholesterol plays a role in the formation of gallstones. You should take care to lose weight slowly as sudden weight loss can also trigger cholecystitis. With timely care, this condition can be kept in control without severe complications.
